I recently had a conversation with a semi-production homebuilder doing about $10M in annual revenues. He was looking for a new construction software solution and wasn’t sure which systems he should look at.
For the homebuilder construction space, the two best mid-market software systems are Sage 300 Construction Software (which used to be Sage Timberline) and Sage 100 Contractor Software (which was previously Sage Master Builder). Although I am quite familiar with both of these solutions, I struggled with what to recommend.
Here’s why: While Sage 300 is far more powerful for accounting than Sage 100, it is also a more demanding system to learn and use. The problem is, this homebuilding company needs a simple system.
After wrestling with it for a while, I finally decided to recommend Sage 100 Contractor Software. Even though the system doesn’t have the same capabilities as Sage 300, and the contractor won’t be able to do as much with the software, the company’s staff has a much better chance of getting it to work successfully for them.

So what does Sage 100 Contractor Software offer homebuilders and other small, growing contractors? In a nutshell, core construction-specific functionality. Here are just a few capabilities of the system:
- Accounting functionality that includes important features such as AIA billing and payroll
- Applications for managing purchasing processes, material inventory and change orders
- Scheduling features
- Reporting tools, including an Executive Dashboard and more than 1,000 pre-written reports
